A house in the Seaside Place neighborhood in Kaunakakai was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon, leaving a family of seven without a home.

Molokai firefighters received the alarm at 5:24 p.m. Monday regarding a structure fire at 308 Seaside Place. When firefighters arrived, they found the 1,400-foot single family home fully engulfed in flames. Units from Ho’olehua and Puko’o also assisted in fighting this fire.

By 6:24 p.m., the fire was under control. Seven people — three adults and four children — occupied the home. One child, a 7-year-old male, sustained a minor injury to his hand. He was treated by medics and transported to Molokai General Hospital.

The three bedroom, two bathroom home was completely destroyed, with losses estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined but deemed as accidental. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.

According to two neighbors, only the four children, ages 2 to 11, were home at the time the fire broke out. One neighbor, who did not wish to be identified, said he believed the children were playing with matches when the fire started.

This is so sad……Mr & Mrs Lopez were so proud of this home (one of the first that was built for them). So many memories there; my daughters, Tammy & Ginger loved being there when they were little. They could just walk across the street to the beach. I’m just happy that none of the children were seriously injured.
