A rollover accident early this morning pinned two Kaluakoi residents in their pickup truck, shutting down Maunaloa Highway in both directions.

The accident occurred at 6:39 a.m. just east of Kaluakoi Road. According to a preliminary investigation by Molokai police, the vehicle was traveling east on Maunaloa Highway less than a mile from the intersection with Kaluakoi Road when it drifted left of the center line and collided with the guardrail on the north shoulder.

After striking the guardrail, the vehicle continued in a southeasterly direction to the south shoulder of the roadway and climbed an embankment. This caused the vehicle to flip onto its roof, pinning the two occupants within.

The passenger, an 86-year-old male, was flown by Medivac helicopter to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he is currently listed in critical condition. The driver, an 86-year-old female, was transported to Molokai General Hospital in stable condition and then airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment. Names were not available.

It is unknown at this time if speed, drugs or alcohol were involved. The accident remains under investigation.
