UPDATE 4/21/14: Molokai patrol officers arrested a 17-year-old male for Arson in the First Degree and Arson in the Third Degree. He was later released to his parents.
Three separate brushfires yesterday on the mauka side of Kalamaula — all quickly contained and extinguished by firefighters — are believed to have been intentionally set, according to the Maui Fire Department.
When the alarm came in at 10:09 a.m. firefighters from Kaunakakai, Hoolehua and Pukoo were dispatched immediately. Fire crew arrived on scene and discovered “three separate fires in light flashy fuels burning at that location,” according to Maui Fire Chief Lee Mainaga.
Two of the fires were burning at the corner of Likelike Avenue and Pookela Street. These two fires merged into one fire approximately a quarter-acre in size. The third fire, also a quarter-acre in size, was located about 50 yards to the west on Likelike Avenue.
No damages or injuries were reported and no homes were threatened. Fire cause has not been determined but it appears that the fires were intentionally set. Police are investigating it as arson.
