Maui County Police Department issued a press release today explaining the details of last Wednesday’s Lanai plane crash that took the lives of two Maui County employees.

On 02/26/14 at about 2111 hours, a plane crash occurred on the island of Lanai shortly after departure. The crash site was located in an area approximately one mile south of the airport locally known as “Miki Basin.” Six passengers and the pilot were confirmed on the plane, owned by Maui Air Tours.
Three survivors, identified as Mr. James GIROUX (43) from Haiku, Mr. Douglas MILLER (57) from Kahului, and Mr. Mark KING (43) from Kihei, are still being treated in hospitals on Oahu. DOUGLAS and MILLER are listed in critical condition and GIROUX is listed in stable condition.
Three passengers perished as a result of the crash. Their names are Mr. Richard ROONEY (66) from Paia, who was also the pilot and owner of the aircraft, Mrs. Tremaine BALBERDI (52) from Kahului, and Ms. Kathleen KERN (50) from Kihei. All victims were positively identified; however, cause of death has not been determined pending the Coroner’s Physicians report.
The aircraft, a Piper PA-31-350 (owned and operated by Maui Air Tours), was chartered by the County of Maui Planning Department for a meeting on Lanai. The County of Maui personnel that were on the flight were:
