Back in September, Molokai High School Athletic Department decided to participate in the Times Supermarket Shop for Score promotion and now the results are in.
With the help of family, friends and word of mouth, MHS athletes were able to garner $2,100 that will go toward purchasing athletic equipment and supplies from Sportsline in Hilo. Shoppers at Times Supermarket would designate points specifically toward Molokai athletics. This was the first time MHS participated in this fundraiser.
“The athletic department thanks all of you for the help spreading the word about this program for our Molokai athletics on social media, personal shopping, and so much more,” said MHS athletic director Hokulani Haliniak. “Again, thank you for the continued help and support for Molokai athletics.”
Back in August 2013, Haliniak announced that the MHS athletic department had a $62,000 shortfall in travel funding. To make up some of this money, the high school started charging admission to football games and holding additional fundraisers.
Helping out was the Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii. In its second annual benefit fundraiser, “Cheers for Molokai and Lanai High,” on Jan. 29, about $100,000 was raised at Murphy’s Bar and Grill in Honolulu to support Molokai and Lanai athletes. Last year it raised $30,000.
Another fundraiser took place on Feb. 7 when a lucky fan almost earned $10,000 by just missing a half court shot at halftime of the boys’ homecoming basketball game against St. Anthony. The fundraiser was sponsored by Molokai Drugs and Rawlins Chevron.
