The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced Tuesday that it has closed vehicular access on the Molokai State Forest Reserve.

This closure goes from the Maunahui access road at the hunters’ check station to the Makakupaia gate. Unsafe road conditions caused by the recent heavy rains made it necessary to close the road. Forest use activities such as hiking and hunting are still accessible.

The area received nearly 2.5 inches of rain in Monday’s downpours and thunderstorms.
The forest reserve access road is projected to reopen as soon as weather permits and hazardous conditions are addressed. Forestry crews will need to use heavy equipment to remove debris from the road and resurface it where needed.

DLNR appreciates the public’s kokua with this closure for public safety purposes.
