Mawae, 27, was in the process of being transported from Molokai to Maui on an unrelated bench warrant arrest on Nov. 22, according to Maui Police Lt. William Juan. Soon after leaving Kaunakakai Wharf, Mawae complained that he was suffering from seasickness and asked to use the restroom.

While an officer stood near the restroom door, Mawae jumped over the railing of the ferry and into the ocean. He then made a short swim back toward the shore but was quickly located and placed back into custody without further incident. The Maui News reported that Mawae was still handcuffed when he jumped overboard, according to an anonymous ferry worker.

Mawae was arrested for Escape in the Second Degree. His bail was set at $2,000.

This is perhaps the funniest story I have read in the last few days, nation and worldwide. Why it has not gone viral, I do not know. I wish we could get the video.

While I do have empathy for the poor fellow and his situation, it is so absurd that it is impossible not to chuckle.
