Two electrical power lines collapsed Friday morning in the Kaluakoi area, leaving approximately 1,200 customers without power, Maui Electric Company reported.

A statement from MECO said that power was lost shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, disrupting service to customers “in the East End and Kaluakoi.” The statement said, “electrical service was restored to East End by 8:40 a.m.” (Statements regarding the “East End” seem puzzling since Kaluakoi is on the West End.).

Another 60 customers remained without power as crews worked to access and repair the lines, which are located in difficult terrain, according to MECO.

MECO estimated that power would be restored by 2 p.m. Later that day, the company reported that the remaining 60 customers had their power by 2:23 p.m.

“Maui Electric is looking into what caused the lines to come down. We sincerely appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we work to restore power,” said the company’s statement.
