This year’s Stampede begins Saturday (10 a.m.- 4 p.m.) and continues Sunday at 9 a.m. until all the events are complete. The weekend will be filled with plenty of barrel racing and branding, a calf scramble, roping and other events.
A special feature this year will be the Paniolo Preservation Society and Hawaii Cattlemen’s Association’s Paniolo Hall of Fame. This is the first time this traveling Hall of Fame has been displayed on Molokai. It will be on display at Kapualei Ranch all weekend for everyone to see.
Along with the rodeo events and the Hall of Fame exhibit will be T-shirt sales, concessions and a lucky number drawing. The grand prize in the drawing will be a 60-inch LG flat screen television. There will also be coolers, a tool box, grills, turkeys and T-shirts. Tickets are $2 apiece.
Paniolos, or island cowboys, date back to the 1800s when skilled horsemen arrived from Mexico to teach locals how to ride and rope on the ranches in Hawaii.
Kapualei Ranch seems ready based on its Facebook post yesterday: “Excitement in the air! Horses from off island are in tonight, all fed, watered and settled in for the night! All horses shipped in looking good and all happy to be back on land!”
This year the limit of 100 teams has not been met so the registration deadline has been extended. Call Kapulei Ranch at 558-8142 for more information.
