A 60-year-old man had to be medically evacuated on Thursday while diving off the southwest coast of Molokai.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that the Coast Guard flew an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter out of Air Station Barbers Point to rescue the man. He was taken to Kuakini Medical Center where he is being treated for decompression sickness, sometimes known as the bends.
The call came in from the Molokai Fire Department regarding a diver who seemed to be experiencing symptoms of decompression sickness.
A Coast Guard flight surgeon evaluated the symptoms and recommended an immediate medical evacuation to the nearest decompression chamber.
