UPDATE May 12: The 69-year-old Kapaʻakea resident operating the scooter was identified as Patricia Bevins. The accident is still being investigated.
A traffic accident in the Kapa’akea Loop homestead area resulted in the death of a 69-year old Kaunakakai woman yesterday.
Police report that the accident occurred on Kamehameha V Highway about a mile east of Kaunakakai at 2:22 p.m. on Thursday. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was riding a motorized scooter-style wheelchair heading east. A van also heading east, driven by a 60-year old man, collided with the back of the wheelchair. The man was not injured.
The woman was taken to Molokai General Hospital where she later died.
This information is based on a preliminary police report and will be updated as the investigation continues. It is unknown at this time whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
