Tree-giving event encourages environmental stewardship

Maui Electric Company News Release

Maui Electric Company (MECO) employees on Maui and for the first time on Molokai will celebrate Arbor Day by encouraging the community to enhance the environment and save electricity by planting a tree.

The very first event of its kind for MECO Molokai, the Molokai Arbor Day Tree Giveaway will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7-10 a.m. at the MECO Pala’au Baseyard. Ranging from four-inch to two-gallon pots, a total of 200 trees will be given away on a first come, first served basis.

MECO employees are looking forward to hosting this event for their community and will be on hand to offer safe planting tips.

“Strategically planting the right tree in the right place can aid in shading walls and windows keeping your home cooler and saving you money on your monthly electric bill,” says Ron Vicens, Molokai Transmission and Distribution Supervisor.

“Safety should always be taken into consideration when planting to ensure that the tree grows clear of power lines when fully mature,” Vicens added.

judging by the time of day i’m probably a bit late with this warning but… i’d be leery of planting the meco variety of tree that is white, grows to ~400 feet tall, has only 3 “branches” and sprouts a root roughly 40 miles long.

    just sayin’
