Kawela fire causes $125,000 of damage

This rental home in Kawela Plantation I sustained $125,000 of damage in a late night fire on Thursday.

A fire broke out at a rental home in Kawela Plantation I causing $125,000 of damage on Thursday night.

Three engines and a water tanker responded to the property at 689 Onioni Drive, according to Maui Fire Chief Lee Mainaga. The call came in at 10:23 p.m. with a reported odor of smoke.

Engine 3 and Tanker 4 were first on the scene and found the home full of smoke. Within an hour the fire was under control and was completely extinguished shortly after midnight.

The wooden structure was a 1,000-square foot, two bedroom, single-story house. The rental home was unoccupied at the time.

No injuries were reported and no Red Cross assistance needed.

According to preliminary assessments the structure sustained $100,000 of damage and another $25,000 of damage to the contents.

The cause of the fire is pending. Investigators from Maui will complete the investigation.

    This is the owners vacation home and not a rental home.

    It’s not a rental. It’s not even fully finished, and never been occupied by anybody but the owners.
