Hospice Hawaii Molokai has a new location. After many years in the nurse’s hale at Molokai General Hospital, a new office in Kaunakakai received a blessing on Aug. 10.

Located next to the Kamoi Snack ‘n’ Go just behind the Kaunakakai Post Office, the new location for Hospice Hawaii Molokai is larger, more publicly visible and offers more privacy for patients. The new office includes a reception area and large multi-purpose room. There is also space for bereavement support groups and community workshops. It also provides room for in-house workshops and training for staff and volunteers. Hospice Hawaii Molokai currently employs six staff members and has seven volunteers.

“It was a dream that one day we’d have our own office,” said Cathy Carras, Patient Care Coordinator. “We’re busier, and we needed the extra room. We used to have to give people directions to find us because they didn’t know where we were. Even before we officially opened, patient families walked in, and so have some patients who are mobile. We’ve seen a lot of traffic already.”

Hospice Hawaii Molokai began in 1999 as a branch program of Hospice Hawaii when community members who were caring for the homebound and elderly as Compassionate Care ‘Ohana partnered with Hospice Hawaii.

Hospice Hawaii, which has been serving the community since 1979, specializes in providing comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families in the comfort of their own homes. Created by the community and governed by a local board of directors, Hospice Hawaii strives to meet the physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients with quality end of life care.
