Just when 10-year-old Alex Mawae thought he was done with racing for the 2012 stand-up paddling season, one more event was added to the calendar for last weekend.

The World Series event at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu was a chance for this young man to paddle with some of the finest paddlers in an action-packed weekend. The World Series event was combined with the North Shore Stand-Up Paddle Race series sponsored by Turtle Bay, Naish Hawaii and Pacifico, giving racers a chance to mix with the top in the world.

Alex chose to participate in the Sprint portion of the event on Sunday and he certainly raised his bar in the paddling arena with a newly-found cheering squad of paddlers and visitors alike as he raced the course. In the 16-and-under category, with boys double his size, Alex showed that he had the ability to be a future top contender with the pros.

He finished a very respectable third place in the junior division. This is one more top three result to add to his resume.

Alex will head back to Turtle Bay for the next race presented by Naish Hawaii on Sept. 1. And who knows, maybe the final event of the World Series at Turtle Bay in October.
