St. Francis ends Molokai’s run to repeat as state volleyball champions

The Molokai volleyball team will play its final consolation match Saturday morning against Radford after failing to advance on Wednesday versus St. Francis.


Molokai will not repeat as state volleyball champions after losing to St. Francis on Wednesday 25-27, 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 in the first round of the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Volleyball State Championships in Kaimuki.

Senior Leenell Hernandez had 10 kills, one block and one ace for the Farmers, who also got nine kills and one ace from senior Natalia Levi and six kills, two blocks and an ace from sophomore Taylor Keli’iho’omalu.

St. Francis was led by Kololia Atoia-Williams with 18 kills.

On Thursday in Kaimuki, the Farmers defeated Ka’u in the consolation bracket, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 6-3.

Now Molokai (9-6) will face Radford in its final match of the season. Play starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena to determine seventh place in the Division II.
