Under flat and difficult conditions, Kai Bartlett of Maui won his fifth title in the 32-mile Steinlager Kaiwi Channel Solo OC-1 World Championship.

With almost no wind or currents to aid the 88 entrants as they left Kaluakoi Beach on Molokai’s West End Sunday morning, only 83 finished the race.

Kai Bartlett of Maui won his fifth OC-1 World Championship on Sunday.

Although Bartlett considered dropping out after two hours, he persevered to finish at Koko Marina on Oahu in 4 hours, 15 minutes and 35 seconds.

Last year’s winner, Danny Ching, placed second in 4:17:42.

Lauren Spalding Bartlett, Kai’s wife, defended her women’s title by finishing in a time of 4:43:57. She was 33rd overall and 30 minutes slower than her time last year.
