Marvelous Tevaga, on top, defeated Casey Duvauchelle of Molokai via TKO in the first round of their heavyweight fight.

A packed and boisterous crowd at The Barn on Saturday night cheered on local fighters who won nine of 12 fights in Molokai’s first ever Mixed Martial Arts event, the Battle at the Barn.

The 14th and final bout of the night featured local boy Jireh Umi Torres winning the 135-pound amateur title over Gerald Casteneto of the Hustle ‘n’ Throw club on Maui. Umi Torres won by submission in the second round.

The other title fight of the night came in the 170-pound class and featured Baba Dudoit, from the Big Island and Molokai, defeating Alioune Diop of Oahu by technical knockout on the first round.

According to promoter Kawika Farm, approximately 1,500 were in attendance, each paying $20 for pre-paid tickets or $35 at the door. The bleachers on both sides of the Molokai High School gym were full as well as the VIP chairs set up around the ring. One observer said the Battle at the Barn had a bigger crowd than most MMA events on Maui.

Also promoting the event was Sale Sproat, Molokai resident and pro-MMA fighter, Kiha Kaina (Maui trainer/promoter) and X-1 World Events (Oahu promoter and licensed business).

When the first combatants, heavyweights, entered the gym about a half hour after the scheduled 5 p.m. start, the music was pumping and the crowd exploded with excitement to see the first live mixed martial arts event on Molokai. Marvelous Tevago, from the Hustle ‘n’ Throw club on Maui, topped Casey Duvauchelle of Molokai by TKO in round 1.
