Teri Waros officially resigned from her position as a Molokai Planning Commissioner yesterday.

Teri Waros, at the Kalele Bookstore, resigned from the Molokai Planning Commission because of the conflict with running her business.
At the regular meeting of the Molokai Planning Commission, acting chairman, Steve Chaikin, announced that Waros had sent a letter to Maui County Mayor Charmaine Tavares offering her resignation.
Waros opened the Kalele Bookstore and Divine Expressions last year in downtown Kaunakakai. Since opening the bookstore, Waros, a former manager for Molokai Ranch, has rarely attended commission meetings. In her letter, Waros cited the current economy as a primary reason. Apparently she cannot afford to hire an employee to watch her store during the twice-a-month meetings.
Adult day care center at Home Pumehana granted extension
In other business, the commission granted a 10-year extension to Home Pumehana so they may continue to operate an adult day care center there. Although the special use permit request was made in 2006, issues regarding off-site parking had to be addressed by the county, which leases the land to Hale Mahaolu.
Local students address issues of concern directly to commissioners
Also at the planning commission meeting, Walter and Loretta Ritte, and a group of students from Ho’omana Hou High School addressed various community concerns in public testimony.
The youth raised issued ranging from homesteader rights, to hunting on private land, preserving historical sites, keeping Maunaloa Elementary School open and the redevelopment of the Kaluakoi area. Afterward, commissioner John Sprinzel said that he has heard a lot of bad things about today’s youth but what he saw at the meeting proves them all wrong.

Walter Ritte finishes his introduction of the students from Ho’omana Hou High School for the Molokai Planning Commission.
