Tsunami warnings pass but gas rationing remains

The tsunami warning came and passed on Saturday yet the gas rationing remains on Molokai.

Shortly after the first tsunami sirens sounded at 6 a.m. Saturday, Rawlins Chevron and the Hayaku Gas Station starting getting a big rush of customers with lines backed up along Ala Malama Street. Customers were rationed to $20 each before the gas stations shut down before 10 a.m.

According to Aunty Shirley Rawlins, the rush for gas continued Sunday even after the tsunami warning was canceled before 2 p.m. Saturday. Island Petroleum, the gas wholesaler for both stations, made the decision to continue rationing through the week, said Aunty Shirley.

The barge with more fuel comes in Saturday morning and the rationing should end then.
