Local rider gets barreled in stand up surfing competition at Sunset
Molokai surfer Ekolu Kalama made a real impression at the first ever Stand Up World Tour event at Sunset Beach last week.
Kalama was the standout in the first round of competition last Wednesday with a big barrel ride on his way to winning the heat. Wave faces of 20 to 30 feet on that day at Sunset forced the event organizers to eventually stop the competition.
Two days later Kalama advanced to the semifinals with a second place finish in the first heat of the day. In the semifinals, Kamala finished third in heat one and did not advance to the finals.
The inaugural Sunset Beach event was the first of four stops on the 2010 tour. Subsequent events will be staged in France, Tahiti and California.
