Molokai Planning Commission nominees accepted until Dec. 31

Maui County is giving residents an opportunity to be part of the commission that makes land management decisions on Molokai. A total of 73 vacant seats on various county boards, councils and commissions are currently open. The deadline to apply is the last day of the year, Thursday, December 31.

Mayor Charmaine Tavares announced the December 31 application deadline yesterday. The county said the high number of vacancies has been caused by term expirations.

Responsibilities for one of these positions include hearing public testimony, reviewing policies and standards and making recommendations.

The one Molokai Planning Commission opening will be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the County Council. Planning Commission members must attend twice-a-month public meetings at the Mitchell Pau’ole Center, held on Wednesdays at noon. The commission makes recommendations to the Maui County Planning Department regarding permit applications for the development and use of land in special management areas.

Applications are available online at www.mauicounty.gov. Go ahead and click on the Boards and Commissions box. Applications can also be found at the Molokai Public Library or at the county offices at the Mitchell Pau’ole Center.

Applications may be mailed to: Mayor Charmaine Tavares, County of Maui, 200 South High Street, Wailuku, HI 96793, or faxed to 270-7870. Applications will also be accepted throughout the year to fill vacancies that arise due to resignations.

All positions are appointed by the Mayor, confirmed by the County Council and have terms lasting two to five years.
