Furlough Friday option offers environmental education for school kids

Today is the first furlough Friday for public schools. Students who attend Kualapuu Elementary are not affected by teacher furloughs since it is a conversion charter public school that sets its own budgets and schedules. In fact, Kualapuu is planning an open house and blessing today for its pre-kindergarten program, which just began this school year.

To accommodate all the idle students today, the group Na Pua No’eau has created a Super Enrichment Day. Students in grades Kindergarten through sixth can participate in the day-long activities with an environmental focus.

Students will learn how to malama the ‘aina, not just today, but every day. Students will be checking out trees, kalo, worms, chickens, piles of opala big and small. Field trips are planned to the Molokai Community College farm and the Na’iwa Landfill. It all starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Molokai Education Center and runs until 2 p.m.

For more information call Na Pua No’eau at 553-9993. There is no cost for this program, which is funded by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

  1. Is there a cause that Walter won’t champion? Is their a protest he isn’t at the center of? This is a wild animal, and it needs to live in it’s natural environment. While it is “cute” to have him around people in the harbor, it is not the best thing for him or the keiki that he might accidently harm. Sharks exist in all the waters in Hawaii, and to say that one is safer than the other is only for a biologist to determine. It would be better to put these efforts at returning jobs to Molokai than to protest in Honolulu to save a monk seal from returning to his wild home.

  2. Some kid made this HILARIOUS video about furlough Fridays.
