Maui County officials announced they plan to investigate allegations that poor maintenance and security may be to blame for contaminants at the Kawela water wells. Pollutants reportedly present at the site include asbestos, which is a material linked to lung cancer and other diseases.
The investigation was spurred by actions of Kaunakakai resident J. William Feeter, former member of the Molokai Planning Commission, who sent photographs of the area to Department of Water Supply Director Jeff Eng, Mayor Charmaine Tavares and County Council Chairman Danny Mateo.
This evidence included images of a broken chainlink fence and an abandoned flatbed truck.
The two Kawela wells provide about 17.8 percent of Molokai’s water supply.
