Relay for Life, celebration of Henry ‘Boy’ Kana‘e’s life this weekend

A couple of important events are taking place on Molokai this weekend. First, the 2009 Molokai Relay for Life begins today at 5:30 p.m. at the Kaunakakai Baseball Park. The relay will be going on all night and finish at 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Last year the Relay for Life set a goal of raising $10,000. When it was all done and over $25,000 was raised to support local survivors struggling with cancer. To celebrate cancer survivors, participants who are survivors receive survivor T-shirt, a survivor pendant, free dinner plate and take part in an honorary survivors lap around the field. Local organizers ask the community to be part of an event that takes one night and one fight against cancer. Call Lily to register or for more information at 553-3607.

And then tomorrow, Saturday, you can celebrate the life of Henry “Boy” Kana’e at the Mitchell Pauole Center from 9 a.m. to 12 noon with lunch to follow. His ashes will be scattered in Halawa Valley.

Henry “boy” Kana’e, known as Uncle Boy and Maui’s own Hawaiian Supa Man, was 55 when he died Dec. 1, 2008. The popular radio host on KPOA 93.5 FM was a popular emcee at community events including the Maui Film Festival when it came to Molokai every year.
